Head on down for some cherry picking on a lazy sunday afternoon. Why sunday? Well much less crowded for one, less traffic another, and just cause cherries are wonderful for the after-saturday hangover. The Niagra winecountry is full of cherry farms, a few Google searches and you can find your favorite. Price is usually free if you buy something, so stuff your face for free, then grab some for home at $2/lb. There's lots to make including jam, compote, cakes and pies..or as is for a delicious snack.
They don't last long, they don't travel well, they don't preserve and need just the right soil. So unless you want to spend $7/lb in the offseason, which is also short, enjoy them while you can. You'll be sorry the other 11 months of the year when you can't have them.
Update 7/2:Seeing as the cherries take a long time to finish, I shall try my hand at some fine Cherry liqueurs, which is another thing you can make. Typically sour cherries are better for this, but we'll try with the sweet variety too. One batch is brewing for 1 month, another for 8 months. It's a long time to wait, but hopefully the harvest will be yummy.
Cost: $2/lb, free all-u-can eat on site
